Former NBA player Lamar Odom has reached a milestone in his recovery from a near-fatal overdose, as a family spokesman confirms he has been transferred from the hospital to a private facility to continue his rehabilitation.
The estranged husband of Khloe Kardashian and co-star of shows like “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” and “Khloe and Lamar” was discovered unconscious at a brothel in Nevada on October 13, 2015. In the time since he has been in a coma, on life support, and has suffered strokes and kidney failure.
According to family spokesman Alvina Alston, the 36-year-old athlete was released from the hospital on Wednesday (Jan. 6); reports say that the move followed a request by Khloe Kardashian that he be transferred secretly to a rehab facility. While there’s no word on his condition, Alston used the words “miraculous and continued improvement” to describe Odom’s current state.
According to Us Weekly, Odom is no longer using a walker. The news comes after his children visited with him for Christmas, with his son Lamar Jr. posting an encouraging photo on Instagram.
Investigators believe that Odom overdosed on cocaine and other various drugs during his three-day stay at the love Ranch, a brothel in Crystal, Nevada. At the time, talk had been circulating that Kardashian and Odom were discussing a divorce — but in the months since the overdose, Khloe has made statements about staying focused on assisting him during his recovery.
Best remembered for his time with the Los Angeles Lakers, Odom won NBA championships in 2009 and 2010, and took home Sixth Man honors in 2011. The former first round draft pick also played for the Clippers, Heat and Mavericks before retiring following the 2012-2013 season.
