Wednesday (Feb. 24) marks what would have been the 48th birthday of late comedian Mitch Hedberg. The stand-up comic died from a drug overdose of cocaine and heroin in 2005 at the age of 37. To honor his birthday in 2016, Reddit user Rexella made a sweet and clever tribute to the comedian.
Posting the photo to Reddit, the picture shows Hedberg’s Minnesota grave with a donut and a receipt for the donut resting on top. It’s a reference to Hedberg’s famous donut joke:
“I bought a donut and they gave me a receipt for the donut. I don’t need a receipt for a donut. I’ll just give you the money, you give me the donut. End of transaction. We don’t need to bring ink and paper into this. I just cannot imagine a scenario where I would have to prove that I bought a donut. Some skeptical friend? ‘Don’t even act like I didn’t get that donut! I got the documentation right here. Oh, wait it’s at home. In the file. Under ‘D.’ For ‘donut.'”
The photo spawned a whole slew of commenters leaving their favorite Mitch Hedberg quotes, which is another fun way to celebrate the comedian’s birthday.
This is not the first time someone has honored Hedberg with the donut joke, either. In 2014, Reddit user BuckWheatWaffle got control of the receipt printer at the donut shop where he worked and added Hedberg’s quote to the bottom.
