Eight years and two full political cycles since she was plucked from obscurity and presented as a candidate for Vice President, Sarah Palin continues to wield considerable political power — as evidenced by her current trip to Iowa to endorse Donald Trump.
But the wholesome values for which she often stands are under attack from developments back home, as a member of the Palin clan has been arrested.
The former Alaska governor’s son, 26-year-old Track Palin, was charged Monday (Jan. 18) with domestic violence and weapon charges. Sarah and Todd Palin’s oldest child was often glimpsed alongside the rest of the family during the 2008 Presidential election when she ran alongside John McCain.
“On 01/18/2016 at approximately 2204 hours, Wasilla Police responded to a residence for a disturbance,” reads a press release from the Wasilla Police Department. “An investigation revealed Track Palin had committed a domestic violence assault on a female, interfered with her ability to report a crime of domestic violence, and possessed a firearm while intoxicated.”
It continues: “Palin was arrested and charges of assault in the fourth degree (domestic violence), interfering with a domestic violence report, and misconduct involving weapons in the fourth degree were forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office. Palin was held without bail until arraignment.”
The timing is certain to raise some eyebrows. Although Palin, now predominantly a news media talking head, has long professed her love for Trump and his campaign, her official endorsement on Tuesday (Jan. 19) was intended to give the GOP frontrunner a boost among conservatives with 13 days remaining before the Iowa caucuses.
“I’m proud to endorse Donald J. Trump for president,” she says in a statement provided by the Trump campaign Tuesday. “I am greatly honored to receive Sarah’s endorsement,” Trump responds in his own statement. “She is a friend, and a high-quality person whom I have great respect for.”
Such intended benefits may be undermined, however, as Palin flies home to deal with family issues antithetical to the conservative platform. With Governor Palin’s son being held, such tensions seem likely to only increase.
