The Oscar nominations will be announced a little earlier next year.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced the official timeline for the 85th Annual Academy Awards today, and the big news is the nomination announcement date is now set for Jan. 10, 2013. That’s five days earlier than expected, and a Thursday instead of the customary Tuesday.
The move also puts the nomination announcement ahead of the Golden Globe ceremony on Jan. 13, instead of after. So movie stars at the Globes will already know if they’ve landed an Oscar nom or not.
The earlier date is designed to allow nominated films more time for consideration, according to the Academy’s official press release: “In an effort to provide members and the public a longer period of time to see the nominated films, the Academy will reveal the 85th Academy Awards nominations on January 10, five days earlier than previously announced.”
This will also be the first year Academy members will have the option of voting electronically.
