eddie murphy a thousand words 'A Thousand Words,' 'Friends With Kids,' 'Silent House' and more blockbuster alternativesThe biggest blockbuster opening this weekend (March 9) is “John Carter,” which features an oft-shirtless Taylor Kitsch and a $200 million-plus budget. It’s hard to compete with that, but several films opening this weekend are trying their best.

“A Thousand Words”
features Eddie Murphy as a selfish literary agent who can only speak 1000 more words before he dies. The movie was actually made in 2008, and unfortunately now that critics have seen it, they’re calling it “drivel.” It even got a 0 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning that literally not a single critic enjoyed the film. Fortunately, crowds are liking it a little better, because it currently has a 61 percent audience rating on the site.

“Friends With Kids” might be a better bet for your money, considering its all-star cast of Adam Scott, Jon Hamm, Maya Rudolph, Megan Fox and more. The film stars Hamm’s longtime girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt as a woman who decides to have a baby with her platonic friend (Scott).

“Silent House”
is the horror option this weekend, starring Elizabeth Olsen as a woman trapped inside the decrepit cabin her father is renovating to sell. Also in theaters is “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen,” starring Ewan MacGregor and Emily Blunt as people trying to bring fly fishing to the desert.

So, will you see one of these smaller films, or are you planning on catching “The Lorax” or “John Carter” or another blockbuster?
