amy winehouse documentary gi Amy Winehouse documentary in the works at Focus Features International

Amy Winehouse‘s family has finally given up the rights to a documentary about the late singer’s life. Focus Features International received a greenlight on the project, which will be directed by “Senna’s” Asif Kapadia and producer James Gay-Rees.

“This is an incredibly modern, emotional and relevant film that has the power to capture the zeitgeist and shine a light on the world we live in in a way that very few films can,” Kapadia and Gay-Rees say in a statement.

The Winehouse family says it’s been approached many times by people asking to make a documentary about Amy’s life. What made this take on the 27-year-old singer’s life and death different was the way it promised to “look at Amy’s story sensitively, honestly and without sensationalizing her.”

After a successful music career and many publicized troubles with substance abuse, Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning on July 23, 2011. Her second album, “Back to Black,” earned her five Grammys. This documentary will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
