The first photos of ‘Barbershop: The Next Cut’ showed Nicki Minaj and Common joining the staff at Calvin’s business. After a nearly 12-year hiatus, the new trailer reveals more new faces that have been added to the barbershop.
For starters, the shop has since been joined with a beauty salon — not to be confused with Queen Latifah’s spin-off “Beauty Shop,” but the neighboring salon from “Barbershop 2: Back in Business.” New additions include Regina Hall, JB Smoove, Deon Cole Lamorne Morris and Tyga.
Additionally, original stars Ice Cube, Eve, Sean Patrick Thomas, Troy Garity and Anthony Anderson return to reprise their roles from the first feature. Director Malcolm D. Lee says that the upcoming comedy will deal with the issues that are in fact a reality.
“The overarching story deals with some of the gang violence in Chicago, specifically Ice Cube’s son is being lured by the gangs because he’s a high-profile basketball player,” he reveals to Entertainment Weekly.
Lee continues, “It really reminded me a lot of ‘Boyz N the Hood.’ It’s ironic that Ice Cube is in the Furious Styles role that Lawrence Fishburne played back in the day.”
“This neighborhood was always rough, but there’s something different going on.” Cube says in the video. Although the film tackles tough issues, it can be seen in the trailer that it is mostly light-hearted.
“Barbershop: The Next Cut” opens April 15.
