Benedict Cumberbatch played iconic characters as Khan, Julian Assange and the dragon Smaug in 2013, and in 2014 he’s tackling similar big name roles.

A first look at the “Sherlock” star as logician and mathematician Alan Turing in the movie “The Imitation Game” has premiered on the film’s Twitter page. It’s no coincidence that this picture was posted on Dec. 24, a very momentous day in Turing’s posthumous history.

In 1952, Turing was criminally convicted of homosexuality. Instead of going to prison, he was treated with female hormones, and died two years later of what many believe was a suicidal dose of cyanide poisoning. Now almost 50 years later, Queen Elizabeth has pardoned Turing of the charge.

“In honor of today’s Royal Pardon, please find the first still released from the upcoming film, The Imitation Game,” the tweet reads.

Turing was credited with cracking the German Enigma code during World War II. “The Imitation Game” also stars Matthew Goode, Allen Leech, Keira Knightley, Mark Strong, Charles Dance, Rory Kinnear and Matthew Beard. No release date has been set, though it is expected that “The Imitation Game” will come out in late 2014.
