ken jeong hangover part 3 iii wb Box Office rakes in more than any other Memorial Day thanks to 'Furious 6' and 'The Hangover III'Thanks to the highly anticipated sixth installment in Universal’s “Fast and Furious” franchise, 2013 marks the biggest Memorial Day Weekend box office ever. “Furious 6” hauled $120 million over the long weekend since its Thursday night debut. It’s the best opening in the series to date.

Of course, that’s a contrast to “The Hangover III” — the last film in the “Hangover” trilogy, and the weakest-debuting. “The Hangover III” opened 24 hours earlier than “Fast and Furious 6,” but only made $63 million over the long weekend. Though it’s by no means a flop, it’s not exactly the high number that Warner Bros. and Legendary expected.

“We underperformed a bit and I was a bit taken aback, but it is what it is,” Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution for Warner Bros., told The LA Times. “It doesn’t help to be a Monday morning quarterback. If I had seen research that suggested our film and ‘Fast’ were not neck-in-neck heading into the weekend, I would have fought harder for a different date.” They’re hopeful that the film, which cost the studios $103 million to make, will perform better overseas.
