ted mark wahlberg Box Office: 'Ted' beats 'Magic Mike' by a very narrow marginIt was an unexpectedly strong night at the box office on Friday as “Ted” and “Magic Mike” vied for first place and surged past the numbers studios expected. “Ted,” Seth MacFarlane’s first motion picture, was in the No. 1 spot. Mila Kunis and Mark Wahlberg led the R-rated comedy, about a man’s talking teddy bear, to a Box Office haul of $20.2 million.

It’s eying a $52 million weekend, which will make it the top-opening R-rated comedy of all time, trumping even “The Hangover.”

In the No. 2 slot is “Magic Mike,” which pulled in $19.4 million — though there’s no word if that was handed over mostly in singles. Given the fact that Warner Bros. bought the movie rights for only $7 million, it’s an impressive haul, due mostly to the fact that droves of women bought advance tickets to see Matt Bomer in a thong.

It’s also worth noting that “Ted’s” per-theater average was only $7 more than “Magic Mike’s.”

Disney/Pixar’s “Brave” came in third place, with “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection” debuting at No. 4 with a respectable $10.3 million. Rounding out the Top 5 was “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted.”
