box office lee daniels the butler oprah weinstein company Box office: 'The Butler' continues to dominate a quiet weekend

As it turns out, a simple butler can dominate even invading aliens and super-powered teens. “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” topped the box office for the second week in a row, beating out new entries “The World’s End” and “The Mortal Instruments” for the top spot.

“The Butler” held on to its top spot in the box office for a second week, adding a projected $15.6 million to its $51 million total. Interestingly, it was a third-week release that grabbed the second-place spot at the box office: “We’re the Millers” will add another $13.1 million to top $91 million in total ticket sales.

New releases managed to sneak into spots 3, 4 and 5 on the box-office charts. “The World’s End,” the final movie in the so-called “Cornetto trilogy” from Edgar Wright, came in third with an expected $9.6 million in ticket sales. Notably, this film is appearing on only roughly half the screens enjoyed by the rest of the top films.

In a disappointing turn for YA adaptations, “The Mortal Instruments” is only fourth for the weekend, adding $8.9 million to make a five-day total of $13.7 million. Horror flick “You’re Next” was good for fifth place at the box office, earning about $8 million.
