the butler box office oprah Box Office: 'The Butler' wins the weekend, 'Kick Ass 2' doesn't live up to its name

For a drama opening in the late summer, “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” had a solid opening weekend. The film ended up bringing in $25 million in its first three days of release, landing it the No. 1 spot the weekend of Aug. 17.

“Kick-Ass 2” was not so lucky. It landed in the No. 4 spot of the weekend, slipping behind “We’re the Millers” and “Elysium” — both of which were in their second week of release. “Kick-Ass 2’s” $13.6 million opening weekend underperformed its predecessor “Kick-Ass,” while made $19.8 in its first weekend of release and $96.2 million total worldwide during its run. It seems as though “Kick-Ass 2” might not be able to recreate the magic the first film had.

Meanwhile, the Ashton Kutcher Steve Jobs biopic “Jobs” brought in $6.7 million in its first weekend, placing it in seventh place, and the Harrison Ford and Liam Hemsworth thriller “Paranoia” only brought in $3.5 million, slipping it down to the No. 13 spot.
