patrick wilson vera farmiga the conjuring warner bros Box office: 'The Conjuring' leads a scary slow weekendWarner Bros. has plenty to rejoice with the surprising box office strength of newcomer “The Conjuring,” but there’s very little else to be excited about when it comes to the weekend’s other new entries.

“The Conjuring” takes the top spot for the weekend, with an estimated $41.5 million in ticket sales, making it just another in the line of low-budget horror films to come swinging out of the gate in 2013 to surprise success. The James Wan-direction film, starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, had a budget of only $20 million.

Other new box office entries didn’t fare as well. DreamWorks Animation’s “Turbo” couldn’t overcome “Despicable Me 2” (which settled in at No. 2, earning another $25 million this weekend) and debuted at a disappointing No. 3 with only $21.5 million in earnings for the weekend.

Summit Entertainment’s “Red 2” placed at No. 5 with a paltry $18.5 million, not enough to tie at No. 4 with “Grown Ups 2,” as it seemed likely to do after Friday’s (July 19) initial numbers came in. (“Grown Ups 2” earned another $20 million in its second week.)

The biggest bomb, however, was Universal’s “R.I.P.D.” The $130 million dollar film, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges as deceased cops who must protect the living, is up there with some of 2013’s biggest flops (“Lone Ranger,” “White House Down”), earning only $12.7 million and coming in at No. 7.

Overall, box office earnings among the Top 12 films was down 19.03% from this time last year and down 3.5% from last week’s holiday weekend. Not a great one for Hollywood this week.

The Top 10 are as follows:

1. “The Conjuring” — $41.5 million
2. “Despicable Me 2” — $25 million
3. “Turbo” — $21.5 million
4. “Grown Ups 2” — $20 million
5. “Red 2” — $18.5 million
6. “Pacific Rim” — $16 million
7. “R.I.P.D.” — $12.7 million
8. “The Heat” — $9.3 million
9. “World War Z” — $5.2 million
10. “Monsters University” — $5 million
