dark knight rises security gi Box Office: 'The Dark Knight Rises' on track for $170M opening weekendDespite the tragic shootings at an Aurora, Colo., screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” early Friday (July 20) morning, the final installment in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy is on track to make $170 million in opening weekend box office returns.

This is all speculation, though, since Warner Bros. won’t be releasing numbers until Monday out of respect for those who died in Colorado. According to The Wrap, other studios will also be holding their numbers in a show of support for the rival studio.

Before the shootings, “The Dark Knight Rises” was expected to finish its first weekend at least on par with May’s $207 million opening by “The Avengers.” Moviegoers appear to be undeterred by the shootings and several jurisdictions have increased police presence at multiplexes.

In a Friday poll, 75 percent of voters in a Zap2it poll said the shooting would not change their plans to see the latest Batman installment.
