The 3D film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic book, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, took in an estimated $51.1 million in its first weekend, earning itself the number two spot in the Top 10.

Though the film proved to be unexpectedly strong, it still wasn’t able to unseat “Iron Man 3,” which raked in another estimated $72.5 million domestically, raising its total box office to $284.9 million after only 10 days in U.S. theaters.

Internationally, the Marvel sequel took in another $89.3 million, ballooning its international total to $664.1 million and its worldwide total to $949 million.

The weekend’s other notable debut, the Tyler Perry-produced “Peeples,” tanked. The film, starring Craig Robinson, David Alan Grier and Kerry Washington earned a measly $4.8 million. “Peeples” comes in at number four, behind “Pain & Gain” ($5 million).
