the purge box office ethan hawke universal Box Office: 'The Purge,' 'The Internship,' 'Much Ado About Nothing' notable for different reasons

“The Purge” starring Ethan Hawke set a new record at the weekend box office. At $36.4 million, the Universal chiller raked in the highest opening numbers for an original R-rated horror film — that is, not a remake or a sequel. In contrast, 20th Century Fox’s “The Internship,” which reunites “The Wedding Crashers” stars, Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, brought in a paltry $18.1 million. Given that the film cost a reported $58 million to make, this seems like a failing grade.
Also in the Top 10, the J.J. Abrams-helmed “Star Trek Into Darkness” (Paramount) became the fourth ever film to cross the $200 million mark domestically, and “The Hangover Part III” (Warner Bros.) was the ninth film to cross the $100 million mark.
In notable art house opening news, Joss Whedon‘s highly-anticipated “Much Ado About Nothing averaged $37,000 per screen. On just five screens so far, that makes a total of $185,000. The film will open wider domestically this month.
Here are the Top 10 films at the June 7 weekend box office:

2. Fast & Furious 6 (Universal)
