brad pitt killing them softly 2012 weinstein company Brad Pitt's 'Killing Them Softly' bombs at box office, graded 'F' by audiencesThe weekend after the Thanksgiving holiday bonanza is usually a quiet one at the box office, which was true again this year as newcomers “Killing Them Softly,” starring Brad Pitt, and horror sequel “The Collection” lived down to low expectations.

“Softly” — which opened to $2.5 million on Friday — has the rare distinction of earning a ‘F’ grade from audiences polled by CinemaScore, according to Deadline. Although the film played the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and earned decent reviews from critics, it was advertised as an intense action thriller instead of the slower paced art film that it really is. That kind of disconnect between marketing and the actual product usually leads to lower audience grades, but ‘F’s are rare. (Previous films to receive the dishonor include 2009’s “The Box,” 2002’s “Solaris” and this year’s “The Devil Inside.”)

The only other new wide release was torture porn sequel “The Collection,” which earned a lackluster $1.1 million on Friday and seems headed for a lower opening than the $3.6 million its low profile predecessor “The Collector” nabbed in 2009.

“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2” once again led on Friday and is expected to finish just ahead of the fourth weekend of “Skyfall” when three day estimates are released tomorrow.

Friday’s box office leaders:
1. “Twilight: Breaking Dawn 2” $5.4 million
2. “Skyfall” $4.8 million
3. “Lincoln” $4 million
4. “Life of Pi” $3.3 million
5. “Rise of the Guardians” $2.9 million
