“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” star Charlie Day takes a hilarious turn as new age philosophy major, Art in Disney-Pixar’s box office smash, “Monsters University.” Zap2it recently sat down with Charlie at Pixar Animation Studios to chat about his role in the film, how his new baby will affect his career choices, and taking on sci-fi in Warner Bros.’ “Pacific Rim.”
Since “Monsters U” is a family film, we wanted to know if Day will take his son to see it. “You know, he’s one-and-a-half years sold,” Day tells Zap2it. “And if there’s something people don’t like in movie theaters, I think it’s screaming babies. So I’m probably going to keep him out of the theater for this one. But hopefully in a year or two, when he’s getting a little older, we can sit down and watch it together.”
When asked whether he has plans to follow in the footsteps of actors like Brad Pitt, who choose certain kid-friendly roles for the sake of their children, Day says that’s not really his style. “I want my kid to look at his father and say, ‘My dad did whatever the hell he wanted to, and because he thought it was good,'” Day says. “So I’ll keep looking for good parts, and I think that would be the best sample I can give him.”
While best known for his comedic roles, Day has some serious acting chops too, that will be on display July 12 when “Pacific Rim” makes its way to theaters. “That was an awesome role to get,” says Charlie. “Guillermo del Toro is a big ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ fan, and asked me if I would be a part of his crazy, epic monster movie, and play a semi-serious character. And I’m not dumb; I said ‘Yeah.'”
As for his cult hit series, moving to FXX in the fall, Day tells Zap2it viewers just might get to experience what a future between his character Charlie and “The Waitress” — played by Day’s real-life wife, Mary Elizabeth Ellis — may look like. Day hints the two will finally hook up in a Pixar-inspired animated dream sequence. We can’t wait.
“Monsters University” is in theaters now, and is No. 1 at the box office for the second weekend in a row. Check out Charlie the trailer for “Pacific Rim” below:
