This year marks the 40th anniversary of Colossus, one of the most beloved members of the “X-Men” family. Yet for whatever reason, more than a half-dozen mutant movies have proven unable to make Piotr Rasputin anything more substantial than a cool-looking guy who stands in the background during action scenes.

Now, with Ryan Reynolds’ eagerly-anticipated “Deadpool” film on the way, fans are hoping for better things — and to fall in love with the work of Stefan Kapicic, the Serbian actor who’ll be inhabiting the metallic skin for the first time. And in his first interview for the film, Kapicic promises that “X-Men” fans will not be disappointed.

“I am big comic book geek,” the hulking 37-year-old tells Entertainment Weekly. “Deadpool was always one of my favorite characters because of the way he handles all kinds of situations. His style and humor make him the perfect antihero.”

Colossus has been getting fans talking since appearing on the film’s recent IMAX poster, and Kapicic is the man whose motion-capture performance brought to life the strongest member of Professor X’s team. The actor, who has previously appeared on shows like “24” and “The Event,” just finished his performance earlier this month for the flick, which arrives Feb. 12.

“It was such a top secret project from the beginning that I didn’t even know what I was auditioning for,” he recalls. “The feeling of becoming a part of the Marvel Universe as Colossus is incredible. Sometimes you just can’t explain that moment, but when you think about it you feel so happy and proud. This is a dream opportunity.”

Being a big guy, Kapicic was perfect for the role. But since “Deadpool” is aiming to do everything a little bit harder, more amplified and intense than the “X-Men” films thus far, it was decided early on that Colossus should be even bigger than we saw him in the Daniel Cudmore performances.

“[Director] Tim Miller’s idea of Colossus was to be bigger and stronger than everyone else, so for the motion capture they needed an extremely tall man  — I’m 6’4”, but he wanted Colossus to be over 7’, so they used a stunt-double to recreate his height,” the actor explains of the process. “Tim also wanted Colossus to sound as close as possible to the comic book character’s background, so he had me come in, since my voice was what he envisioned for Colossus who has an authentic Russian accent.”

As for working with Reynolds as Deadpool, Kapicic says: “There is no actor in the world with such talent and charm that could play Deadpool as well as Ryan Reynolds … It was just great fun to work one-on-one as Deadpool and Colossus.”
