dolphin tale 'Dolphin Tale' swims past 'Moneyball' for box office title, new releases underwhelmThe heartwarming underdog story that stars a dolphin beat out the heartwarming underdog story that stars Brad Pitt at the box office this weekend. No new release, meanwhile, really broke out.

“Dolphin Tale” claimed the lead at the box office for the Sept. 30-Oct. 2 weekend by making an estimated $14.25 million. “Moneyball,” starring Pitt as Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane, took second with $12.5 million.

Both movies showed pretty good staying power in their second weekend of release: “Dolphin Tale” dropped only 26 percent from its opening, while “Moneyball” dipped 36 percent.

Disney’s 3D re-release of “The Lion King” dropped to third after two weekends at No. 1. It made an estimated $11.1 million.

The best of the four new wide releases was “50/50,” which made $8.85 million and finished fourth. The Christian drama “Courageous” was right behind with an estimated $8.8 million; it also had the best per-theater average of any wide release for the weekend.

“Dream House” came in sixth, and the comedy “What’s Your Number?” finished eighth. They bookended the Taylor Lautner action vehicle “Abduction,” which fell from fourth to seventh place in its second week.
