Disney is a progressive company, admirably committed to equal rights for all. But when it comes to animated popcorn movies about talking snowmen and cryokinetic princesses, how much of a social responsibility should they shoulder?
That’s the question these days as the Internet has latched on to a new idea, not unlike the time they got Betty White to host “SNL” or Samuel L. Jackson to scream about snakes on his plane. This time, however, they’re determined to make Elsa from “Frozen” a lesbian — and predictably, conservative groups are beginning to heat up over the Snow Queen.
It all began last month, when Twitter user Alexis Isabel Moncada launched the popular #GiveElsaAGirlfriend hashtag, telling the Daily Dot that she hoped it would get Disney’s attention. Since some fans have interpreted Elsa’s journey in the original film as a metaphor for those who’ve struggled with coming out of the closet, many apparently want the sequel to be a far more literal continuation — and have even created art to depict what would undoubtedly be a groundbreaking plotline in children’s entertainment. There’s also a petition on Change.org, asking Disney to give Elsa a girlfriend.
Moncada, a bisexual Latina who runs the blog Feminist Culture, says #GiveElsaAGirlfriend is an important movement that has fueled tens of thousands of tweets and re-tweets in its first 24 hours. “Honestly, it bothers me a lot,” Moncada tells the Daily Dot. “I know there are lots of girls out there, including myself, who have been so confused as a child about their feelings.”
On one hand, you might think: Who would it hurt? On the other, well, here comes CitizenGo — a social conservative group with a petition asking Disney not to “give into the pressures of the liberal agenda.”
“Join us in standing against the absurd ‘movement’ to turn Queen Elsa of ‘Frozen’ into a lesbian during the 2018 sequel, ‘Frozen 2’,” says the petition which as of press time has 106,000 signatures — more than halfway to its goal.
Things are beginning to get quite nasty, as a conflict over a kids film seems to be evolving into a struggle for the hearts and minds of young people all over the world.
“‘Frozen’ is the highest-grossing animated film of all time. Its influence reaches into the hearts and minds of children,” says the petition. We are asking you to fight back now. Ask Disney for Elsa to fall in love with her Prince Charming.”
Thus far, Disney has not responded or acknowledged either side. But with CitizenGo launching #CharmingPrinceForElsa, it should be interesting to see which hashtag gets the most buzz in the days and weeks to com
