hansel and gretel witch hunters box office 'Hansel and Gretel' wins a weak weekend at the box office

“Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” isn’t exactly a hit, but it’s the closest thing the box office got on a slow weekend. With only two other new films — “Parker” and “Movie 43” — released, the competition wasn’t particularly strong.

Despite mixed reviews and a lot of skepticism, the Jeremy Renner fairytale-action movie, “Hansel and Gretel” made an estimated $19 million during its opening weekend. This beat out horror film, “Mama” — which made $12.9 million to make $48.6 million total in two weeks — and the awards-friendly “Silver Linings Playbook” — $10 million in ticket sales got the film to $69.5 million overall.

The two other new releases did not fare so well. “Parker,” starring Jason Statham, made only $7 million for 5th place at the box office. The bizarre comedy, “Movie 43,” (starring roughly every actor on the planet) only reached 7th place with an estimated $5 million.

Rounding out the weekend box office were “Zero Dark Thirty” (4th place, $9.8 million), “Django Unchained” (6th place, $5 million), “Gangster Squad” (8th place, $4.2 million), “Broken City” (9th place, $4 million) and “Les Miserables” (10th place, $3.9 million).
