joss whedon avengers 3 gi Is Joss Whedon already set to direct 'The Avengers 3'?Fans hoping Joss Whedon will do anything other than his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the next several years might be out of luck. During a recent interview, “Iron Man 3” writer Drew Pearce seems to confirm that Whedon is set to direct “The Avengers 3” after already helming “The Avengers” and “The Avengers: Age of Ultron.”

Pearce also wrote “All Hail The King,” the new Marvel One Shot starring Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin from “Iron Man 3.” Asked if the events in that short film, which is included on the “Thor: The Dark World” Blu-ray release, will have repercussions farther down the road, Pearce gave a somewhat cryptic answer.

“One of the things when you’re a writer or director in the Marvel universe is you come in, you leave some tasty morsels dangling at the end, and maybe you’re the one who comes in and picks them up again next time, or maybe it’s someone else, or maybe they just hang there awhile and that’s fine too,” Pearce tells “That’s all you can really hope to do. Unless you’re Joss [Whedon] and you’re making ‘Avengers 2’ and ‘3,’ and then you have a pretty good idea if you’re making the next one or not.”

Of course, Whedon’s involvement is far from confirmed news. In fact, Pearce backtracked his comment on Twitter by saying he actually has no idea about what Whedon’s affiliation with “The Avengers 3” is (though conspiracy theorists might view that as a Marvel cover-up).

Whedon’s contract with Marvel currently goes until 2015, when “Age of Ultron” is slated to be released. Pearce might have just been assuming that Whedon will be back for “The Avengers 3” — which also isn’t yet confirmed — instead of having inside intel. Still, the idea of Whedon being back should be welcome for fans who have enjoyed him being at the helm of Marvel’s biggest movie property.
