The force is strong with “Star Wars” merchandising, but one thing fans are up in arms about regarding “The Force Awakens” is the lack of Rey (Daisy Ridley) merchandise, including the fact that Hasbro left Rey out of the Monopoly game. Instead, four male characters were included — Finn (John Boyega), Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Darth Vader, who doesn’t even appear in “The Force Awakens.”
Hasbro’s explanation for the missing Rey is that it was to avoid movie spoilers, but JJ Abrams says if that was the case, it didn’t come from him.
“I wish I had more details about merchandising and the schedule. I’m learning things sort of as you are,” says Abrams. “But I will say it seems preposterous and wrong that the main character of the movie is not well represented in what is clearly a huge piece of the ‘Star Wars’ world in terms of merchandising.”
He continues, “I read that she wasn’t in the Monopoly game and was quickly making phone calls about this because if it were true — and it is true — now Hasbro has of course said we’re going to put Rey in. It doesn’t quite make sense to me why she wouldn’t be there. She’s somewhat important in the story.”
