As one of the actual stars of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” John Boyega knows that his life will change after the film’s release. But while the three stars of the original trilogy, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford, are all in the new film, Boyega tells The Hollywood Reporter that they haven’t really been dispensing any advice to him — the advice is coming from another source.
“I’ve been able to pick out a few things that are beneficial, but in terms of direct advice none of them have given any,” says Boyega of the original stars.
There’s a big difference between becoming famous in the mid-1970s and becoming famous in the social media era, and Boyega knows that “this is the first ‘Star Wars’ movie in the age of social media, and it’s a different path.”
But that’s all right, because in an earlier interview with Hollywood Reporter, Boyega said that instead of getting advice from Han, Luke, and Leia, he has an unexpected mentor: Robert Downey Jr.
“He’s helped me prepare for how my life is going to change and that has been inspiring,” says Boyega. “I’m talking to someone who understands the power of choices, both positive and negative.”
Another fun fact Boyega shared in the more recent interview: he currently has not one, but six different lightsabers at home. Not to keep all to himself — “Lightsabers I’m going to give away to certain people when I see them,” he says.
But that doesn’t mean he’s opposed to having fun with the iconic prop while he’s still got so many. “There is one that is open to just swing around a few seconds when I walk around the house,” Boyega jokes.
