Get ready to see why Leonardo DiCaprio has been sporting that gnarly beard for the past year. The first trailer for Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Inarritu's ("Birdman") upcoming film "The Revenant" is out and features DiCaprio as a rugged frontiersman.
"I ain't afraid to die anymore," says DiCaprio's character Hugh Glass. "I've done it already."
The film, which is based on true events, follows Glass, an 1820s frontiersman, as he sets out on a path of vengeance against those who left him for dead after a bear mauling. Among those friends who betrayed him are John Fitzgerald, played by Tom Hardy. Hardy and DiCaprio last starred together in 2010's "Inception."
Glass' journey poses several challenges for him along the way, as he faces brutal winter conditions. "The Revenant" is ultimately a man's journey to survival and happiness, as Glass is born again, returned from the brink of death (hence the title).
The film also stars Domhnall Gleeson ("Star Wars: Episode VII") and Will Poulter ("We're The Millers"). It was shot in 80 days over a nine-month period because the director wanted to use only natural light.
"The Revenant" hits theaters in limited release Christmas Day.
