Have you thought about Tom Green and/or his 2001 bomb “Freddy Got Fingered” in a while? Well, neither had a North Carolina man … until he was arrested for not returning the VHS to a local video store.

WSOC, a local ABC affiliate, reports that James Meyers was arrested Wednesday (March 23) on a misdemeanor failure to return rental property charge. He was pulled over for a tail-light that was out while he was taking his daughter to school. The officer ran Meyers’ license and then asked Meyers to step out of the vehicle in what probably turned into the weirdest traffic stop ever.

“The officer said, ‘I don’t know how to tell you this but there’s a warrant out for your arrest from 2002. Apparently you rented the movie “Freddy Got Fingered” and never returned it.’ I thought he was joking,” Meyers tells WSOC.

Meyers says the officers let him take his daughter to school and then go to work after he promised to turn himself in later that day. It was then that Meyers was actually arrested — put in handcuffs — and taken to the magistrate’s office. He has an April 27 court date, which he is hoping to have dismissed.

“They’re not focusing on the crimes I think they should be focusing on,” says Meyers. “That hour the cops sat out there with me, the hour and a half I was down in the magistrate’s office could have been spent somewhere else.”

Someone who agrees with Meyers is none other than Green himself.

According to the Daily News, Green called Meyers Wednesday evening from his stand-up tour in Australia. Green tells the Daily News that he wanted to support the fan of his film and offered to put in a good word with the court or even pay for the fine as long as it isn’t an outrageous amount.

The misdemeanor Meyers is charged with carries a fine up to $200.

“If it’s 200 bucks of course I’ll pay it for him, just for the principle of the thing,” says Green.
