They are five of the most famous words in pop culture: “Luke, I am your father.” Now, Star Wars fans are seizing upon a perceived Mark Hamill gaffe to speculate that his Luke Skywalker could someday be delivering a similar line in the new trilogy: “Rey, I am your father.”
Speaking with students at England’s Oxford University Wednesday (March 2), the 64-year-old sci-fi icon addressed a question about actress Daisy Ridley with an interesting word: “Daughter.”
“Daisy is incredible, so genuine, appealing, loveable, she beams, she has a wonderful charisma, I adore her,” Hamill responded. “She’s my daughter’s age – and that’s how I relate to her.”
Of course, fans are on the hunt for clues because the galaxy far, far away is rife with characters related to other characters — and as audiences were falling in love with Rey while watching “The Force Awakens,” it was hard to miss the none-too-subtle hints that she is the offspring of some character from the original trilogy, most likely Han Solo or Luke.
This being perhaps the most secretive movie franchise of all time, the UK Sun reports that when Hamill made his statement, there were audible gasps from an audience who believed they had just heard the spoiler of the century. Realizing what happened, Hamill quickly back-pedaled.
"I don’t mean anything by that," he insisted. "As actors that’s how I relate to that.”
So, did Mark Hamill just go to the Dark Side for a brief moment? Or is he using Jedi mind tricks on the "Force Awakens" fans? Until "Episode VIII" comes out in December of 2017, we'll all just have to remain as clueless as Jar-Jar Binks on the battlefield.
