Melissa McCarthy fans unleashed hellfire when the “Mike & Molly” star’s November 2013 Elle magazine cover hit newsstands.

The actress, who has been criticized for making a career out of making “big” funny, appeared on Elle’s cover looking super glammed up, but with her trademark fuller figure hidden under a billowy trench coat. McCarthy proponents felt the mag was hiding the star’s big and beautiful physique. But she herself said no way — the wardrobe choice was her own idea. “I think they are crazy,” McCarthy said of the magazine’s outspoken critics. “I had a great dress on. I was the one who grabbed the coat.”

Earlier in 2013, McCarthy’s heavily altered image — along with that of her co-star Sandra Bullock — on the promotional poster for “The Heat” drew the ire of moviegoers. The UK version of the film’s poster went viral when people couldn’t help but notice McCarthy’s face and neck had been airbrushed into oblivion.

Since McCarthy seems to have a good attitude about it all, does that mean the rest of us should just get over it? Or do Hollywood and the fashion industry need to take a long, hard look at their standards with regard to what type of appearance sells?
