“The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” doesn’t open in the US until August 23, but plans are already well under way for a sequel, “The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes,” reuniting stars Lily Collins (“Mirror, Mirror”) and Jamie Campbell Bower (“Camelot”).
Director Harald Zwart and screenwriter Jessica Postigo Paquette are also set to return and production is expected to begin in the fall. The sequel will be touted to buyers at the upcoming Cannes Film Market.
Based on a popular series of Young Adult novels by Cassandra Clare, “Instruments” centers on Clary Fray (Collins), a Shadowhunter who battles demons including vampires and werewolves.
Although the books are internationally successful — selling over 16 million copies worldwide — moving ahead on a sequel before seeing how the first film fares at the box office feels premature. While “The Twilight Saga” and “The Hunger Games” have shown the potential for YA-based blockbusters, notable bombs including this year’s “Beautiful Creatures” and “The Host” demonstrate that nurturing a hit takes careful handling.
Time will tell which way “Instruments” falls, but for now the producers are clearly bullish on its prospects.
