planet of the apes 'Planet of the Apes' rises to top Friday box office, 'Change Up' falters at #4

A strong Friday at the U.S. box office has franchise reboot “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” easily poised to win the weekend after its $19 million haul dwarfed its closest competition.

“Apes,” which stars James Franco, John Lithgow and a computer-rendered chimp played by
Andy Serkis, received solid praise from critics for its special effects.

Last week’s nearly-tied champs, “The Smurfs” and “Cowboys & Aliens” have some more space between them this weekend, with the little blue guys taking in $5.7 million on Friday and the sci-fi western nabbing $4.6 million.

Easily a disappointment for the box office beleaguered Ryan Reynolds, the Green Lantern’s “Freaky Friday”-esque buddy comedy with Jason Bateman, “The Change Up,” only earned $4.6 million in its first night of release.

That’s in stark contrast to the performance of most of this summer’s R-rated comedies — “The Hangover II,” “Bridesmaids,” “Horrible Bosses” — which have been runaway hits.
