The latest installment in the horror franchise from Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich was trailed by the Disney-Pixar’s 3D rerelease of “Finding Nemo” which earned an estimated $17.5 million.

But Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “The Master,” was the weekend’s biggest surprise. Screening at just five theaters in New York City and Los Angeles, the controversial Scientology-inspired film starring controversial Scientology-inspired film starring Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams raked in $729,745.

“The Master’s” whopping per-screen average of $145,949 easily tops “Moonrise Kingdom’s” record-setting average of $130,749 in its four-theater debut.

Rounding out the weekend’s top 5 flicks are “The Possession” ($5.8 million/$41.2 million cumulative) “Lawless” ($4.2 million/$30.1 million) and “ParaNorman” ($3 million/$49.3 million).

“The Expendables 2” came in sixth with $3 million ($80.3 million cumulative), followed by Bradley Cooper‘s “The Words” ($2.9 million/$9.2 million), “The Bourne Legacy” ($2.9 million/$107.8 million), “The Odd Life of Timothy Green: ($2.5 million/$46.3 million) and “The Campaign” ($2.4 million/ $82.9 million).
