We already know that Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool is going to be a fast-moving, highly-trained, smart-alecky merc with a mouth. Now, we’re learning that he’s also going to be … a bit of a swinger.
“[He’s] pansexual,” the director of the upcoming film, Tim Miller, tells Collider. “I want that quoted: Pansexual Deadpool.”
In case the Burt Reynolds-spoofing pic of the red-suited hero lying on a bear-skin rug in front of a fireplace didn’t clue you in, Deadpool likes to joke around about his sexual prowess. Which is very faithful to the source comic, which has evolved considerably since the character was introduced as a supervillain in 1991.
Asked about Deadpool’s sexuality earlier this year, co-creator Fabian Nicieza said on Twitter: “Deadpool is whatever sexual inclination his brain tells him he is in that moment. And then the moment passes.” In 2013, “Deadpool” comics writer Gerry Duggan called him “ominsexual,” explaining: “I consider DP ready and willing to do anything with a pulse.”
According to Ryan Reynolds, the upcoming film will stay faithful to that idea of a swinging superhero — in essence, this ain’t your dad’s Superman film. “There is some sexuality in this movie for sure,” he says. “You kinda think you have moments when you’re shooting where you think, ’This is, uh, a little excessive. This is a comic book movie. Are we gonna get away with this?’ But so far so good. The studio hasn’t crushed us with anything.”
“Deadpool” will be swinging into a theater near you February 12, 2016.
