Shailene Woodley’s career is really taking off now that her ABC Family series “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” has come to an end. She’s in talks to star in hot Young Adult novel adaptation “Divergent,” set in a futuristic society where humanity has split into five factions based on virtues: the honest, the selfless, the brave, the peaceful and the intelligent.
Deadline reports Woodley would play a young woman who reaches the age of initiation into one of those factions and faces unexpected fallout with her family and a new love interest in the process. If that sounds suspiciously similar to “The Hunger Games,” it’s worth noting that Woodley was one of the actresses in contention to play Katniss Everdeen, and we doubt she’d sign on for a simple ripoff.
“Divergent” will be directed by Neil Burger (“Limitless”) and written by Evan Daugherty (“Snow White and the Huntsman”) based on the book by Veronica Roth.
Woodley recently received a Golden Globe nomination for her acclaimed performance as George Clooney’s daughter in “The Descendants” and is also in talks to play Mary Jane opposite Andrew Garfield in the sequel to “The Amazing Spider-Man.”
