joss whedon much ado about nothing gi 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron': Joss Whedon reveals why he chose the sequel's villainWhile it may not have been the biggest news to come out of Comic-Con 2013 (that distinction lies with the whole “Superman vs. Batman” reveal), Joss Whedon and Marvel Studios’ announcement that the follow-up to “The Avengers” would be entitled “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” certainly caused an undeniable frenzy. Not only were those less-versed in comics history confused on just what Ultron is, plenty wondered why Ultron at all?

Speaking with Total Film, Whedon offered up why it was important that the sentient and destructing-hungry Ultron made his appearance now — and how long he’d been hoping for it.

“I was pitching Ultron before I took the job on the first movie,” Whedon admits. “I was like, ‘I don’t know if I want to do this, but for the second one, you should totally do Ultron.’ Because he’s been a thorn in their side as much as any other character over the years and particularly back in my history.”

It was important that Whedon find an antagonist that presents a true challenge for the Marvel supergroup. “He was great,” the director adds. “He’s somebody who can juice things up and he’s a real problem for the Avengers. That’s not always easy to find. It’s not like the Vulture is really going to give them a hard time for 20 minutes.”

Do you think Ultron is the perfect villain for the Avengers to face in the sequel?
