the hobbit an unexpected journey extended edition box 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' extended edition to feature 13 extra minutes

Fans of Peter Jackson‘s Middle-earth films should be pleased at what he is going to be including on the upcoming “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” extended edition set. The full details about the special edition have been revealed, and the set will be released on digital platforms on Oct. 22 and in stores on Nov. 5.

Just like the “Lord of the Rings” extended editions, “An Unexpected Journey” will feature additional footage to expand the theatrical version of the movie. In this case it’s 13 extra minutes that “extends individual scenes,” says a press release. That sounds like there aren’t any new scenes per se, with the extra time coming from expanded theatrical scenes.

Even more exciting for J.R.R. Tolkien fans is the fact that the extended edition includes nearly nine hours of new special features. Among them are audio commentaries, a multi-part documentary called “The Appendices” and another featurette called “New Zealand: Home of Middle-earth.”

“I’m thrilled that the Extended Edition will give fans the opportunity to experience certain key scenes in the film as they were originally shot, as well as an abundance of special features,” Jackson says. “It’s exciting to present this expanded and enriched version of ‘An Unexpected Journey’ to allow fans to fully immerse themselves in the movie, before seeing the second part of the trilogy.”

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” will cost $54.98 for five-disc Blu-ray 3D set (it also includes regular Blu-ray), $35.99 for a three-disc Blu-ray set and $34.99 for a five-disc DVD set. “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” is due in theaters on Dec. 13.
