While ‘Batman v Superman’ is gaining major buzz as the mashup movie of the year, Japanese studio Kadokawa has decided to mesh together two other film franchises: “The Ring” and “The Grudge.”
Appropriately titled “The Ring Vs. The Grudge,” the project has been announced for a 2016 release but, as of now, it will only be released in Japanese theaters.
Even without the English subtitles, horror fans can gather that the infamous VHS tape from “The Ring” finds itself in the hands of the homeowners of the creepy ghost-ridden house in “The Grudge” series.
It is unclear whether or not the members of the undead will be at battle with each other, or instead band together to wreak havoc on the living.
Perhaps it could do a little of both, much like 2003’s “Freddy vs. Jason.” The American horror mash-up introduced “A Nightmare on Elm Street’s” Freddy Krueger to “Friday the 13th’s” Jason Voorhees and some cheesy chaos ensued.
Both films, “The Ring” and “The Grudge,” were originally Japanese films “Ringu” and “Ju-On,” respectively. Perhaps an Americanized version of the two villains collaborating is the next step for the fear-filled franchises.
Imagine Sarah Michelle Gellar and Naomi Watts joining forces to rid the world of the murderous supernatural beings once and for all.
“The Ring Vs. The Grudge” opens June 2016 exclusively in Japan.
