When “The Way, Way Back” premiered at Sundance, it was a hit. The film, starring Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Allison Janney, Sam Rockwell and Maya Rudolph, follows 14-year-old Duncan (Liam James, “The Killing”) as he comes of age on a summer vacation with his mom (Collette) and her awful boyfriend (Carell). The stacked cast may seem like an achievement, but it was a long road there for co-writers and first-time directors Jim Rash and Nat Faxon.
As revealed in this newly-released clip of the audition process, Rash’s “Community” co-stars Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Gillian Jacobs and Yvette Nicole Brown, along with Will Forte (“SNL”) each sought out a part in the film. Things did not go especially well for any of them.

“The Way, Way Back” opens July 5, 2013.
