Toby Keith closed out the second annual American Country Countdown Awards with a heartfelt tribute to country legend, Merle Haggard.

Keith is the perfect musician to play Merle's songs as he notoriously stepped in to perform during Haggard's final show. The story first hit Facebook a month ago thanks to actor W. Earl Brown.

As Brown says in the post, Keith kept Merle's dignity intact. Bringing a fitting end to Sunday's (May 1) ceremony, Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey introduced Keith.

Supported by his longtime backing band The Strangers, Toby Keith was joined by Merle's son during the melody featuring hits "Working Man Blues," "Mama Tried," "Today I Started Loving You Again," "Silver Wings" and "Okie From Muskogee."

The entire audience was on its feet in a unified sign of approval for the performance. The Haggard family was also in attendance and when things were all said and done, Toby Keith presented a lovely tribute to a country music icon.
