Syfy is serious about expanding its original programming, and the network presented three new dramas — “12 Monkeys,” “Ascension” and “Dominion” — to prove it at the 2014 upfronts in New York on Thursday (May 15).

Find out about the three upcoming dramas here.

“12 Monkeys”

Based on the Bruce Willis/Brad Pitt movie of the same name, “12 Monkeys” is a messy, dark time-travel story. Most of the world has died of disease in the future, so a time traveler heads to his own past in order to make sure that humanity’s doom never happens.

If “12 Monkeys” can make time travel work, this could be a good dystopian bit of science fiction. If not, it may disappear as quickly as a non-existent time traveler.

Starring Tricia Helfer (“Battlestar Galactica”), “Ascension” could most simply be described as “Mad Men” in space. The premise has an ultra-secret spaceship launched in 1963 for a 100-year voyage to a new planet. Halfway through the journey (aka, 2014), murder puts the very survival of the mission in question. And in space, there’s no one to hear you scream.

Angels have come to Earth, and it turns out they’re really horrible. Humanity has been decimated by the angel-incited genocide and clings to the hope of a Chosen One who might be able to turn the tide. The resulting look is rather Byzantine, with angels familiar to anyone who watches “Supernatural.” Also, “Buffy” star Anthony Stewart Head is in it. “Dominion” premieres Thursday, June 19 at 9 p.m. ET/PT
