oliver stone oct 20120gi 2012 Presidential Debates: Oliver Stone 'surprised by the level of intelligence' after George W. BushAcademy-Award winning director Oliver Stone, an avid historian, whose latest goal is, “to generate a national conversation” with his upcoming Showtime documentary series, “The Untold History of the United States” is following every step of the presidential race, he tells Zap2it.

“Both parties made it clear they will enforce the old rules of the empire,” Stone says.

After watching the first debates between President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, Stone — who directed “W” the 2008 biopic of President George W. Bush starring Josh Brolin — says, “I was surprised by the level of intelligence of both because I had become so accustomed to Bush.”

Stone, never one to shy away from a controversy, takes a contrary view in the documentaries, which he made with Peter Kuznick, a history professor at American University.

“There is no one talking about what we are talking about,” Stone says. “Maybe Dennis Kucinich, but the media is not listening. What John Mitchell said in 1970 is that this country will go so far to the right we will no longer recognize it.”

His 10-part series, starting Monday, Nov. 12, uses historical footage and takes a perspective rarely seen; that the United States is not the lone beacon of bravery throughout the world.
