Throughout history, mankind has stood in awe of many epic feuds. From the Hatfields vs. McCoys to the Red Sox vs. Yankees to Biggie vs. Tupac, the participants have voiced utter disdain for one another as innocent bystanders breathlessly watch the collateral damage. Now, there’s another feud brewing, this time in the world of … Olympic women’s soccer?
“Its 2 bad we cant have commentators who better represents the team&knows more about the game @brandichastain!” Hope Solo posted to her Twitter account on July 28th, tearing into Brandi Chastain‘s guest commentating during the U.S. win over Colombia.
Chastain, the gold medal winner who famously stripped off her shirt after making the final shoot-out goal in the 1999 World Cup, criticized defender Rachel Buehler and her troubles playing the ball out of the back under pressure. Solo, a current Olympian, took umbrage at the perceived attack on one of her team mates.
“Lay off commentating about defending and gking until you get more educated @brandichastain,” Hope further tweets. “The game has changed from a decade ago.”
As for Chastain, the former soccer great has held back from making it a full-on Twitter feud, but did address Hope’s comments on NBC. “As a defender, your responsibilities are to defend. . . win the ball, and then keep possession,” the 44-year-old explains. “And that’s something that [defender] Rachel Buehler actually needs to improve on in this tournament.”
Solo, meanwhile, continued to escalated the dialogue, tweeting: “Its important 2 our fans 2 enjoy the spirit of the olympics. Its not possible when sum1 on air is saying that a player is the worst defender!”
“My only comment is I am in London to cover women’s soccer for NBC in an honest and objective fashion,” Chastain tells US Weekly (http://www.usmagazine.com/). “That is what I have done, and will continue to do for the rest of the tournament.”
Finishing off her rant for now, Solo says that Chastain should be more like her co-host, NBC Sports lead soccer commentator Arlo White. She wrote: “I feel bad 4 our fans that have 2 push mute, especially bc @arlowhite is fantastic.@brandichastain should be helping 2 grow the sport.”
Where do things go from here? With Team USA’s women’s soccer squad battling North Korea on Tuesday and Chastain expected back in the broadcasting booth, things should be interesting.
