Five years after the premiere and swift demise of “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” Aaron Sorkin is heading back to television.

HBO has given a series order to his untitled pilot about the inner-workings of a TV newsroom, making it the first premium cable series for the creator of “Sports Night” and “The West Wing.”

First announced in January, the pilot received a great deal of attention for its casting, counting Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Alison Pill and Sam Waterston among its stars.

The series focuses on a cable news anchor (Daniels), his staff and boss as they, per HBO, “set out on a patriotic and quixotic mission to do the news well in the face of corporate and commercial obstacles and their own personal entanglements.”

Sorkin’s research for the series reportedly found him shadowing Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews at MSNBC, as well as anchors at Fox News and CNN.

An hour-long project, Sorkin will serve as executive producer alongside Scott Rudin and Alan Poul. John Gallagher, Jr., Olivia Munn, Dev Patel and Thomas Sadoski round out the cast.
