abby sunderland getty Abby Sunderland's family filming reality showAbby Sunderland, the 16-year-old sailor whose boat went missing in the Indian Ocean and was subsequently rescued, will be part of a reality show with her family.

According to KTLA, her father Laurence Sunderland was broke when he signed on to film the show “Adventures in Sunderland.”

Abby hasn’t yet filmed, as the contract was signed several weeks after she set off on her voyage. Filming began in February at the family’s home in Thousand Oaks, CA. Abby’s mother is pregnant with her eighth child.

The seven Sunderland children are home-schooled and they intend to become “world-class adventurers.” When Abby was lost at sea, she was attempting to set a record for being the youngest person to circumnavigate the globe on a solo voyage. Her older brother, Zac, briefly held the record in 2009.

Abby has been planning the voyage since she was 13 years old. Her parents have been criticized for allowing their children to be daredevils, but according to Magnetic Entertainment – the company producing the reality show – it’s just part of their parenting philosophy.

“Their philosophy on building strong well rounded adults is to mentor
their seven home schooled children into setting goals, creating a plan
to reach those goals, and implementing them… allowing each of them to
pursue their dreams of becoming world class adventurers,” the production’s website states.
