Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan hosted the 49th Academy of Country Music Awards, and while neither of them should quit his day job, they proved pretty adept with their opening comedy bit.
Bryan scored a quick laugh with an ad-libbed line about the shower of confetti that landed on the likes of George Strait and Taylor Swift following The Band Perry’s opening song: “This is not a Head and Shoulders commercial,” he joked.
Here are some of the duo’s best one-liners from the show opening:
Shelton: “If you don’t want to see live music, go down the street to see Britney Spears.” (Mix of laughs and groans from the crowd; missed opportunity in not cutting to a reaction shot of Britney’s sister Jamie Lynn, who attended the awards.)
Shelton, on next year’s 50th anniversary show taking place at AT&T Stadium in Dallas: “You never see an awards show at the Cowboys’ stadium.”
Bryan: “You never see a playoff game there either.”
Shelton: “A year ago, same-sex marriage meant once you got married, you just had the same sex over and over and over.”
Commenting on Carrie Underwood’s success in NBC’s “The Sound of Music Live,” the hosts said country stars were in demand for more Broadway musicals.
Bryan: “You and Miranda [Lambert] would be perfect for ‘Beauty and the Beast.'”
Shelton: “And you could be in ‘American Idiot.'”
