Velshi plans to anchor a half-hour weekly show on the yet-to-launch Al Jazeera America network that could expand to a daily format before the end of the year. He’s been with CNN since 2001, most recently as the anchor of “Your Money,” and becomes the first major on-air hire for Al Jazeera America.

Arabic news network Al Jazeera purchased Current TV earlier this year in order to launch a New York-headquartered English-language channel in the U.S.

“I’m thrilled to be joining Al Jazeera America, an organization that puts quality, fact-based journalism first,” Velshi said in a statement. “It’s a tremendous opportunity and I look forward to taking advantage of the extraordinary U.S. news-gathering capabilities the channel is building and working with such a diverse and talented group of colleagues to tell compelling stories that matter to Americans.”

CNN has undergone several changes of its own recently under the leadership of new president Jeff Zucker. Several familiar faces have left the network, and a brand new morning show is in the works anchored by former ABC newsman Chris Cuomo and Kate Bolduan.
