Archeologists in Bulgaria claim to have unearthed two skeletons that were pieced through the hearts with iron rods to keep them from turning into vampires.
“These two skeletons stabbed with rods illustrate a practice which was common in some Bulgarian villages up until the first decade of the 20th century,” national history museum chief Bozhidar Dimitrov tells Agence France Presse.
People believed those who did bad in their lives might rise again as vampires, said Dimitrov. They also believed the rods would keep them pinned in the graves, unable to prey on the living.
The find is nothing new. Bulgarian officials have found at least 100 similar graves.
