A newly slim, sockless (he forgot to pack them) birthday boy Alton Brown (he turned 47) took time out from promoting the new Food Network series "The Next Iron Chef" on Thursday (July 30) night to give us his list of five items he can't live without in his kitchen.

Considering Brown's widely known disdain for items that can only do one thing, we were a bit surprised to find that a panini press is on the list. Of course, we also didn't realize you can grill vegetables and make a "wicked" doughnut dessert on one either.
