Am I crazy or is The Secret Life of the American Teenager becoming a smidge more realistic?
Lately the conversations about Amy being a teen mom and what that means are suddenly grounded in a bit, just a bit, more reality. It’s like we are getting a glimpse of what the show has the potential to be. Oh there’s still the series’ trademark ridiculousness (I can’t even take in with Ben these days and what about the guidance counselor talking about his marriage to a student) but finally the people around Amy and Amy herself are understanding what it will mean to be a teen mom. The recent scene between Ashley and her mom where the show addressed the fact that Ashley is morosely sarcastic was particularly appropriate. Sure Molly Ringwald‘s Anne is still the sanest one of the bunch but I’m happy the series has moved away from fake teen weddings. Of course if the series becomes any more realistic it will lose it’s so bad it’s good status.
They’re also dealing with teen pregnancy over on 90210. And I think it’s the best storyline the show has going right now. Maybe Aimee Teegarden brought over just a touch of the quality of Friday Night Lights with her when she guest starred. I was thinking this week about the fact that Jessica Lowndes wasn’t even part of the cast when 90210 was paraded in front of the press this summer and now she’s an integral and crucial part of the show. And I think she’s doing a great job with the part. Her character has had a drug addition, gone to rehab, had an HIV scare, is pregnant and the season isn’t even over yet. With most actresses, this amount of melodrama could quickly make a character highly annoying but I still have a great deal of compassion for Adrianna and I’m really interested in what happens to her next. I think she’s officially the Kelly Taylor of the show (complete with a challenging mom) which is a good thing.
Many of you have written me that you are liking more of the secondary characters on 90210 more than the main cast. So I have to ask, if you could vote any one character off of 90210, who it would it be? I think you know by now that my choice would be Annie (Shenae Grimes). I did kind of love the irony this week that the drama teacher told Annie she still had a lot to learn about acting. I know it wasn’t supposed to be an inside joke but it kind of was, wasn’t it?
Who would you vote off 90210? Talk about it below.
Quotes of the Week
“Aw, I’ll make it up to him this week. I’ll head over there for dinner, bring him a pouch of big league chew, maybe watch a couple episodes of ‘The Mentalist,’ he’ll be fine.” Shawn to Gus on Psych. Thanks to Jackie and Caroline who were the first to submit this week’s most popular quote.
“I’ve got to make sure that You Tube comes down to tape this.” Michael (Steve Carell) on The Office about his roast.
“Lee’s given the quorum a shove but it would take a cavity search to find a backbone in that sorry bunch.” Tigh to Adama on Battlestar Galactica. Thanks to Barry for the quote
“I’m not one to accept good news unless I know where it comes from.” President Taylor on 24.
“I have to make them come back — even if it kills me.” Locke to Sawyer about the Oceanic 6 on Lost.
“You taught me to put people in front of myself. It felt kind of wonderful. I can strike that off the list now.” Tyler Martin to Chuck on Chuck. Thanks to Wendy for the quote.
“Middle of Basic Instinct and you bang Sharon Stone?” Dean after Sam sleeps with the woman he thinks is the killer on Supernatural. Thanks to Sandy for the quote.
Exchange of the Week
“Don’t tell me, you’re going to build some kind of bomb out of champagne and baking soda?” Rachel to Dr. Jacob Hood on Eleventh Hour.
“Rachel, I’m a scientist not MacGyver. Shoot the lock.” Dr. Jacob Hood’s response. Thanks to Kindra for the exchange.
Jin is Alive!
You know in A Streetcar Named Desire how Stanley bellows “Stella! Stella!” That’s kind of how I was during this week’s episode of Lost, I just kept screaming “Jin! Jin!” throughout the hour. Somehow I thought if I screamed loud enough he would show up and he did. Thanks to all of you who sent me emails about the fact that Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) is alive. I’m glad we have each other to share our excitement with.
Couple Jin being alive with the fact that Karen showed back up on The Office and I really am thinking I can make anything happen on television by the sheer force of my will. You know what this means don’t you? Dylan McKay will so be coming back to 90210.

Ask TV Gal
Can you please give us a little info on the upcoming show Castle? Loooove that our Nathan is coming back!! Thanks, Jessie.
Oh Jessie this is a very tough topic for me to talk about. Castle premieres on ABC Monday, March 9 at 10 p.m. And it does star Nathan Fillion, one of my all time favorite actors. I loved him in Buffy and Firefly. He was terrific in the movie Waitress and fabulous in Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog. Now I’ve only seen the pilot of Castle but, and it pains me to say this, it did not inspire confidence. Fillion is charming as ever as a popular mystery writer turned crime solver but the show definitely lets him down. The script is lacking and the production values not befitting a network show. I was delighted when I heard Fillion would be headlinging a show so I’m not going to dismiss Castle just yet. I need to watch a few more episodes but I’m not feeling that hopeful.
I must ask, why aren’t you writing about Battlestar Galactica? It’s arguably the best show on television right now (certainly better than Lost – don’t hate me) and yet it is getting no TV Gal time. This saddens me. Cheers, Emily
Emily, I get this question quite a bit. And, alas, I don’t have a good explanation. I wish I had some fantastic reason why I don’t watch Battlestar but I don’t. There is not time to watch everything and all I can tell you is that I totally missed the boat on BSG. Somehow (and I can’t even remember why) I didn’t watch it when it first premiered and never really caught up. I have this idea that one day I’ll sit down and watch the series from start to finish and we’ll have one big conversation about how awesome the show is. I believe all of you when you tell me I should be watching but given the mythology of the show I’m thinking it’s too late now to catch up. Kind of like how I understand why it’s too late to start watching Lost now. And I know what you’re thinking, “She has time for 90210 and Gossip Girl and she doesn’t have time for BSG.” I know this is not a satisfactory explanation and I hold myself accountable for falling short of my TV Gal duties.
That’s all for today. I’m back on Monday with thoughts on Gossip Girl, Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters and much more. Also coming next week the premiere of Dollhouse (hooray!) and the Grey’s/Private Practice crossover. Have a question? Seen a familiar face? Want to nominate a quote of the week or a topic for discussion? Write me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Have a great weekend. Talk to you on Monday.
