Check out this video from “60 Minutes,” where Charlie Rose gets unprecedented access to Amazon, including a couple impressive technological advances the company is working on right now.

Amazon now does same-day delivery for groceries in two cities and is looking into using Drones to deliver in the future.

Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s CEO, says, “These are effectively drones, but there’s no reason that they can’t be used as delivery vehicles. Take a look up here so I can show you how it works. … I know this looks like science fiction. It’s not.”

The drone won’t work for everything, but Bezos talks about half-hour delivery in urban or suburban areas on packages up to five pounds, which is over 80 percent of what Amazon deals with as it is. Wow. It’s years away, but 2016 is still not that far away.

There is also a tease about another thing Amazon is working on that will most certainly affect TV viewing:

Rose: “Are you working on a set top box that will allow people to watch streaming video and not need to have cable television?”
Bezos: “I can’t answer that question (laughs). I don’t wanna talk about the future roadmap of our devices. So I’ll have to just ask you to stay tuned.”

And of course, the Amazon drones have their own Twitter account already — it’s unofficial and very funny.

“You didn’t think those Washington Post newspapers were going to deliver themselves, did you?” and “Amazon Drone: Because you want your artisanal cheese delivered NOW.”
